Regional Information -

from Wolfsberg to Bleiburg

The area where the foothills of the Pannonian Sea once shaped the landscape is now home to one of the most fertile regions in the country. Indeed, even early populations such as the Celts and Romans recognised the zone's favourable climatic qualities, and established extensive settlements.

Today, numerous archaeological sites have uncovered some magnificent traces of the region’s early wealth. Framed by the Mountains Koralpe and Saualpe to the north and Mount Petzen to the south, this extensive landscape enjoys renown for a number of reasons. In addition to boasting fertile soil which is perfect for the cultivation of fruit, the area around Lake Klopein is also one of Carinthia’s undisputed top tourist attractions.

Historical buildings dominate the whole region: Wolfsberg is home to a magnificent Tudor-style castle, which draws the eye from miles around, whilst St. Paul and Eberndorf host extensive abbeys. The town of Bleiburg is throne to the Thurn-Valsassina castle.

Here, where culture and nature combine in complete harmony, hospitality is an innate part of our character. South Carinthia's gastronomy invites visitors to experience truly perfect moments in one of Austria's most beautiful regions.
